Why do we hiccup ? हम क्यों हिचकी करते हैं?
Why do we hiccup?
Hiccups happen because of spasmodic contractions of our diaphragm. When our diaphragm contracts, our lungs inhale sharply. This intake of breath in the throat causes that little 'hic' sound.
People hiccup from childhood though old age. Pregnant women sometimes feel their babies hiccupping inside the womb. We might get hiccups if we laugh too hard or eat spicy food or if our stomach becomes bloated. What's happening is an irritation of either the vagas or the phrenic nerve, those are the nerves that control your diaphragm and your voice box. That irritation causes your diaphragm to contract repeatedly and irregularly.
Everyone has a favourite hiccup remedy. We can drink water upside down, or get a scare. Increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in our body can reduce the hiccups' frequency. That's why holding our breath might work. Or stimulating the area of our throat above the oesophagus might help, try a drink of ice water.
