How can birds fly in the dark?
Although most birds go to roost when the sun sets, there are many species that can fly through a darkened sky- because of a variety of techniques. Owls, which hunt at night, have developed eyes that contain extra large retinas. A larger retina means more light can be collected, so owls can see in very low light levels. In addition, some owls, such as the Barn Owl, have very good hearing.
And birds use another sense that doesn't depend on light, which they use to guide their flight-based in the inner ear. Birds have a balance system that's generally similar to that of humans. Fluid in the inner ear sloshes back and forth over tiny hairs that send signals to the bird's brain. That's how the bird determines its attitude--whether it's level, diving, banking or rolling. Scientists believe that some birds, particularly migratory birds, use Earth's magnetism for orientation. Small traces of the iron mineral magnetite have been found in the brains of such birds. This mineral is thought to interact with Earth's magnetic field.
It's possible that stars may assist some birds in flying at night. Some birds may follow particular patterns of stars to help them reach their final destination.
